My favorite way to use a curling iron

The chance that you know the basic mechanics of a curling iron are pretty high. I mean, most of us grew up with mothers or older sisters who used them. But are you using the curling iron the same way that I use it? Lets find out.

Our natural reaction in using a curling iron is to start twisting the hair around the barrel from the ends, and that can create a problem. The ends of the hair are closest to the heat source which means that that part of the hair becomes the curliest. The root area of the section is the last thing to be curled and becomes flat quicker. Flat roots and volume on the ends equals a triangular shape, not so flattering, right?

So, how do we fix that? Start by curling the root area first. I start twisting the curling iron at a downward angle about 1″ away from the roots. If I’m looking for a more natural/curly result, I’ll unloop the first twist while the hair is still clamped and continue to twist down the hair. Leave the end of each section straight for a more beachy-easy going look.

Of course there are other ways to use a curling iron to get the curls you want! Everyone is different in their needs and in their preferences. I have a friend that prefers to use her curling iron like a wand and wrap her hair around it. That method works for her and she LOVES it. I personally love this method because my hair stays in longer, is curled more evenly, and I can get it done fast.
