5 Challenges with Flat iron curls and how to solve them

Ok, you’ve watched the videos, and you’ve read the instructions, but the flat iron curls are still not looking the way that you want them to. Remember, flat iron curls are tricky, and this is normal! Let me share some common challenges people face and my tips to help solve them. If you’re still having problems after that, then let’s schedule a one on one session together. Get more information on that HERE.

1. My hair doesn’t hold a curl- I hear this most often from people with straight hair. They use the flat iron, it looks great, but it doesn’t last more than a few minutes. Try twisting the flat iron more before you drag it down the hair and slow down the pace that the flat iron is moving.

2. My hair get frizzy- I’ve seen this challenge in my own hair. The flat iron seems to create a frizzy texture and doesn’t seem to seal the cuticle down. Try using a blow dry cream and heat protectant on the hair before you use the flat iron. It will create a protective layer and will create a seal when the heat touches the hair. In addition, try using smaller sections to allow the heat to penetrate completely through the hair that is being curled. Click my resource page HERE for product recommendations.

3. I only get volume at the bottom of my hair- The #1 cause of this is the position of your flat iron. Aim the flat iron down towards the floor and not towards the side. It’ll elongate the curl and help each curl lay flatter.

4. I twist the flat iron, but a curl never comes- After the hair is curled, we often need to show our hair the direction that we want it to go. Wrap the hair around your finger to help the shape come to life.

5. My hair got too curly- This usually happens when we twist the flat iron too much or we didn’t move the iron fast enough through the hair. It’s an easy fix though! Take the flat iron and lightly pass it straight down the curl and it’ll straighten it out.

As a general rule for myself, I tend to make my hair curlier and bigger the first day I wash/style it knowing it’ll loosen up as the week goes by. You may want to consider doing the same thing to extend the longevity of your hair.
