Just like a building needs a solid foundation to withstand the elements, a hairstyle needs a solid base. I’m talking about hair products to hold your style in place. You can’t expect your perfect braid crown to stay in place during a crazy wind storm, or your sleek low bun to stay frizz free while chasing your kids around. Your hair needs something to cling to, to help keep it’s form. It can’t do it on it’s own, it needs product. Contrary to what you knew growing up, using hair spray to freeze the style at the end isn’t going to cut it either.
In a hairstyle, there are two key things to note. First, you need clean hair. If you’re hair is weighed down by grease and dirt, it won’t keep the volume or shape that you want. It’ll look great at first, but by the end of the day, it’ll be flat. My curls always look better the day that I wash my hair as opposed to waiting to curl it 2-3 days after washing.
With that being said, you will want to have some sort of grip and grit to the hair. Clean hair is usually slick and very hard to handle. Imagine trying to braid your hair and each section just slips out your hands. By using dry shampoo or texture spray, it helps create a barrier on the hair allowing the style to hold better. Using product is key in helping you get some grit. Use a mousse or styling cream when it’s wet, it can help build the density of the hair.
I had a cute friend reach out to me the other day raving about how cute her messy bun was. I will never forget what she said. “I finally get it Brakell. I’ve always been frustrated with how weak my messy bun were. This week I started using the products you’ve suggested and my bun has never looked this full before!” I can’t tell you you happy that made me feel!
So I want to shoot you a challenge. Before you put your hair in a messy bun, ponytail, or braid, trying using some hair products. Allow your hair to have a foundation to hold on to and to make it beautiful. I’m hoping to create a resource page soon on where to find my favorite products, but in the meantime, look at my women’s holiday gift guide for the links. If you need help knowing how, refer to my Instagram for some help. If you already use product, what challenges do you face? Are you up for the challenge?
